چکیده

Possible ferromagnetism induced in otherwise nonmagnetic materials has been motivating intense research in complex oxide heterostructures. Here we show that a confined magnetism is realized at the interface between SrTiO3 and two insulating polar oxides, BiMnO3 and LaAlO3. By using polarization dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we find that in both cases the magnetism can be stabilized by a negative exchange interaction between the electrons transferred to the interface and local magnetic moments. These local magnetic moments are associated with magnetic Ti3+ ions at the interface itself for LaAlO3/SrTiO3 and to Mn3+ ions in the overlayer for BiMnO3/SrTiO3. In LaAlO3/SrTiO3 the induced magnetism is quenched by annealing in oxygen, suggesting a decisive role of oxygen vacancies in this

Upper limit to magnetism in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures.

Using polarized neutron reflectometry we measured the neutron spin-dependent reflectivity from four LaAlO(3)/SrTiO(3) superlattices. Our results imply that the upper limit for the magnetization averaged over the lateral dimensions of the sample induced by an 11 T magnetic field at 1.7 K is less than 2 G. SQUID magnetometry of the neutron superlattice samples sporadically finds an enhanced momen...

Termination control of electronic phases in oxide thin films and interfaces: LaAlO3/SrTiO3(001).

A wealth of intriguing properties emerge in the seemingly simple system composed of the band insulators LaAlO(3) and SrTiO(3) such as a two-dimensional electron gas, superconductivity and magnetism. In this paper, we review the current insight obtained from first principles calculations on the mechanisms governing the behaviour of thin LaAlO(3) films on SrTiO(3)(001). In particular, we explore ...

Proposal of a one-dimensional electron gas in the steps at the LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interface.

The two-dimensional electron gas at the interface between LaAlO(3) and SrTiO(3) has become one of the most fascinating and highly debated oxide systems of recent times. Here we propose that a one-dimensional electron gas can be engineered at the step edges of the LaAlO(3)/SrTiO(3) interface. These predictions are supported by first-principles calculations and electrostatic modeling which elucid...

Hydrogen adsorption and carrier generation in LaAlO3-SrTiO3 heterointerfaces: a first-principles study.

Using the first-principles method, we investigate the hydrogen adsorption on the polar AlO(2) surface of LaAlO(3)-SrTiO(3) heterostructures with an n-type interface. It is found that the H atom is most stable when bound at the surface O atom. The adsorption energy for a given H density is lowered (i.e., stronger binding) with increasing LaAlO(3) thickness. The adsorbed H atom donates electrons ...

Anisotropic two-dimensional electron gas at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (110) interface

The observation of a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas between two insulating complex oxides, especially LaAlO₃/SrTiO₃, has enhanced the potential of oxides for electronics. The occurrence of this conductivity is believed to be driven by polarization discontinuity, leading to an electronic reconstruction. In this scenario, the crystal orientation has an important role and no conductivi...
